It's been ages since I felt that wind throw up the sea-spray -
waves at my feet and in my eyes -
and it's been months since nine o clock was not even darkness -
shadow moonlight on the lawn -
and it's been years since I first stayed up
(sorry, I can't sleep)
to spend the night with you.
Your overwhelming scent of new beginnings has filled my world yet once again.
And with it come the memories.
Oh, the memories.
Thunderstorms in the early hours, navy blue and electric white: you kept me safe, and you didn't want it to rain on your birthday, and it didn't.
When it rained on my birthday, the clouds were low and the air was sticky, and we were too sleepy and happy to care.
Every time, your words come back to me -
like the hopeful promise of storms in the night.
And even now, your eyes tell me stories -
like the wind in the sky and blue-green sea.
I thought it would be over by now, I thought I'd learn
but summer holds the history and some things never end
